APRICOT CHERRY MINI CRISPS…there’s joy in blogging!
“You’ve got to go out on a limb sometimes because that’s where the fruit is.” Will Rogers Summer’s here in full swing, & we’re slowly seeing the market getting flooded with ‘stone fruits’. It began with mangoes, then cherries, & now it’s apricots. Peaches are beginning to surface as well, but haven’t reached the ‘fully ripe’ & ‘lusciously juicy’ stage yet. This is what I love about summer in North India … all the fruit from the fruit basket in the Himalayas that reach the plains in much abundance. Very yummy situation indeed … It’s one of those rare days that I bake, & then try & blog about it…

BERRY DELICIOUS INDIAN COOLER … Phalse ka Sherbet
“Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer, and like it.” Russel Baker Oh to have a berry to call your own! What a blissful feeling it is to find pretty berries here after going green with envy reading about blueberries, cranberries & just about every other berry under the sun in blog land. Along comes a plum-purplish tiny Indian berry, the phalsa…Throughout our childhood, & until a few years ago, it was fairly common for door-to-door hawkers door to ring the doorbell, selling this berry at our doorstep. The summer afternoon silence was often shattered by their piercing calls, when very few would venture out while strong,…

Saffron Pistachio Yogurt Ice Cream…Happy IWD
“I’d much rather be a woman than a man. Women can cry, they can wear cute clothes, and they’re the first to be rescued off sinking ships”Gilda Radner This frozen dessert came out more beautifully than I thought it would. I have been meaning to post it for a bit, but something or the other kept cropping up. The hub sang praises with every spoonful, & no, not because he wanted another helping, but because he truly enjoyed the flavours. Saffron & pistachio compliment each other perfectly, in colour & in soul! It was more creamier than I imagined it would be, it did have a slight tartness of yogurt…

Pancakes + Lentil = Lentil Pancakes
“Lentils are friendly—the Miss Congeniality of the bean world.” Laurie Colwin There’s been much talk of pancakes & Lent across blogs this past week. My mum mentioned some nice savoury pancakes made out of chickpea flour that she ate at a friends house the other day. The very thought appealed to me, & yesterday, when I was out of ideas of what to cook, I thought I’d try my hand at some pancakes, but using soaked lentils instead of flour. The equation sounded funny. Pancakes + Lent = Lentil Pancakes!!! LOL! Made these very simple & very delicious savoury moong bean pancakes stuffed with a mild cottage cheese filling. We…

STRAWBERRY PANNA COTTA WITH A STRAWBERRY COULIS…the one that wouldn’t oblige!
“I leave my fats for dessert.”Bruce Mathews My favourite dessert of all time is a panna cotta. Panna cotta, an Italian dessert, which literally means cooked cream, is luxurious & creamy, eggless & sensual. In winter, we like a deep dark chocolate panna cotta. Come summer & I’m all for fruity flavour. With winter on it’s last legs here, throwing up the odd cold front now & again, strawberries are flooding the market. Good fresh strawberries are available for a shortish period of time, & then they kind of perish in the heat. I made a panna cotta with strawberries the other day because I had 2 boxes in the…

BLUEBERRY OAT WALNUT GRANOLA BARS…Yummy mouthful!
“With all that together, you’ve got a snack with lots of fiber, vitamins and protein.”Emily Walker A friend of mine was flying down from the UK in December ’08 & she asked if I wanted anything from there. Me? Yes, of course! I never let a good offer go by & asked her to ‘please’ get me some dried cranberries, blueberries etc. Don’t know if she’ll ask me again in a hurry, but she got me lots of bags of dehydrated blueberries, dried cherries & a couple of beautiful baking books too. One thing I do miss not getting here are fresh berries, & the only local dried ‘berries’ we…
