NIBBLY BUCKWHEAT CHOCOLATE-CHIP COOKIES…& BUCKWHEAT CONNECTIONS!
“The unexpected connection is more powerful than one that is obvious.”Heraclitus My connection to buckwheat goes back many many years. It was in the year 1996 when the daughter was 6 months old that I had my first encounter with the grain. Didn’t know it existed before that. We were visiting friends in Moscow (the same ones we were with in Sydney last month), & Meher was just beginning to eat semi-solids. We had landed in Moscow airport on a grey, rainy day, the place full of strapping tall Russians with stern expressions & a ‘cold world’ charm. The city was like it was out of a film…babushkas lined up…

Saffron Indian Rice Pudding … sweet indulgence
“I haven’t had the rice pudding of my life today. But I guess I lost that opportunity with the end of my childhood.”William Rice The magical combination of the holiday season & winter gives rise to many rich dessert making opportunities. The nip in the air makes it all the more enjoyable, & dare I say, somewhat guilt free. This is an indulgent pudding we enjoy once in a while…an eggless Indian rice pudding, a recipe I have concocted over the years, & often make on the go. The quality of rice changes from time to time, but the pudding is quite forgiving. Add some milk if it is too…

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE ALMOND TORTE FOR MUM’S BDAY
‘Life is like a chocolate cake, Take something bitter, something dry, something wet, and a little bit of leaven, mix well, and let it bake someplace hot. The result is something sweet!’ ~ Unknown~ Flew in from Sydney a day before my Mom’s birthday, which falls on the 24th of November, with a sick child on hand so no hope for cake. But the daughter made a miraculous recovery on home ground & all her hunger pangs were back in full force. Past doctor visits, blood tests & test results the next morning, she was declared clear to return to normal food…so the 2 of us raced home to bake…

Sydney Without a Beach Visit is like Cake Without Frosting… Part IV!
Part IV of my Sydney travelogue covers a beautiful beach we went to, after crossing the Harbour Bridge & entering North Sydney. A visit to Sydney is incomplete without a visit to the beach (or better still, beaches). It’s true…& more so for kids. We stopped by Bondi the last time we visited, which was in June of 2004…cold, windy but beautiful. This time we decided to explore Balmoral. Balmoral features Balmoral and Edwards Beaches, both of which are separated by the outcrop of Rocky Point. Both beaches are usually referred to as simply Balmoral.A stunning beach, with a beautiful island of it’s own, Rocky Point. The boys had a…

OAT WALNUT WAFERS…From The Australian Heritage Cookbook
“The oat is the Horatio Alger of cereals, which progressed, if not from rags to riches, at least from weed to health food.” Waverley Root I first bumped into Susan, the Food Blogga gal, last year over her Eat Christmas Cookies event…& thereafter never let her go. A charming blogger, beautiful posts & a wealth of trivia about whatever she posts, Food Bloggas’ is one of my fave haunts. She works her charm into my world, & then, added bonus, there’s Dermadoc who drops by inadvertently at times too…LOL! Her Mom & Dad are accomplished foodies too…& Susan’s blog is fun all the way. I’m late sending in an entry…
