Dark Chocolate, Ricotta and Ginger Tartlets with Poached Pears
“One way to get the most out of life is to look upon it as an adventure…” William Feather What spells Fall? Longer nights and shorter days. Leaves just about beginning to change colour. More serious food choices coming forth. Hola… September’s here, and with it Fall / Autumn in many parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Adios to the lightness that spelt summer. Stone fruits have been pipped by pip fruits, and the seasons first apples and pears are beginning to creep in. We’ve sadly said goodbye to the last of the stone fruits, plums were the last to go. There was a time that my heart sank when the…

Fresh Peach Ginger Peasant Cakes … a vegetarian twist to Julie & Julia’s clafoutis!
“I think the inner person is the most important. . . . I would like to see an invention that keeps the mind alert. That’s what is important.”Julia Child The release of Julie & Julia has led to a Julia Child wave among blogs, food blogs in particular. Elle’s New England Kitchen & Food Blogga featured some beautiful blog posts on the film. Do head for their blogs as Elle & Susan have some sweet sound bites on the film. The film’s official blog, Julie & Julia also is well worth a visit. The other day I saw a beautiful Cherry clafoutis that Val posted @ More Than Burnt Toast.…

WORLD OATMEAL COOKIES … with Dried Cranberries, Crystallised Ginger, Walnuts & Raisins
“I’ll feed them milk and cookies.”Brent Sutter I love a good oatmeal cookie. Had a bag of dates & thought I’d do a date & walnut something. Surfed the net for ages looking for something ‘cookie’ to make with dates & walnuts. Obviously & predictably, got hopelessly distracted, & ended up making these tasty morsels … without using dates of course! Not really sure if I would like dates in my cookies, I played around with ingredients in an old oatmeal cookie recipe I had. Ended up with these delish cookies, using some crystallised ginger & dried cranberries I had on hand. What I like about this recipe is that…

CANDIED GINGER & TANGERINE SHORTBREAD
“I am still convinced that a good, simple, homemade cookie is preferable to all the store-bought cookies one can find.” James Beard Mmmmmmmmmm shortbread! Think shortbread – think crisp, think buttery, think an indulgent cookie… Add some crystallised ginger & tangerine peel to it & you give this traditional favourite a delicious twist. Go a step further, dip it into dark chocolate, & you reach dangerously delicious shortbread nirvana! Yes, that is what I did!It all began with the David Levobitz’s post on candied ginger. I made a whole bunch of it, with candied tangerine peel as well, & have had a great time experimenting with my crystallised ginger &…

GINGER FLORENTINES…World of Spice Cookies Event!
“C is for cookie, it’s good enough for me; oh cookie cookie cookie starts with C.”Cookie Monster It’s a race against time, like a fight to the finish. Thankfully no resolutions for me this year, otherwise, one would most certainly have been not to work under pressure. But this time, cookies I have to make, & the reason is Meeta. I’m on the deadline, with ginger in one hand, & crystallised ginger in the other, getting to her World of Spice Cookies episode of Monthly Mingle @ What’s For Lunch Honey. This is one event I try very hard not to miss, & the large-hearted lady has allowed me on-board…

OOOOPS, I DID IT AGAIN! CRYSTALLISED GINGER & TANGERINES
“I loved ginger; I’ve always recognized its tremendous healing power,”Chris Reed I thought I would never let me heart win over my head again. Have made the same mistake a 1000 times over, but ooops, I did it again! A month ago, while talking to my friend in Kiev, she mentioned that she couldn’t find any crystallised ginger in Kiev at all, & was in a fix as she really wanted it in her Christmas cake. She excitedly called back a few days later to say her friend who was visiting Istanbul found some & picked it up for her. End of story, blah, blah, blah. Hmmmmmm…or so I thought!…
