O Banaras, the holy city
Our iconic trip to Banaras was memorable, action packed and absolute fun all the way {warning long post}. I was going to do a smallish post, but a load of folk on FB asked me for a more informative one, so here goes. In any case, Banaras can never be a small post. I can see myself going there again soon. The city grows on you!

CHICKEN CURRY WITH FENUGREEK…WORLD FOOD DAY
“Food is a central activity of mankind and one of the single most significant trademarks of a culture.”Mark Kurlansky The time has come the walrus said…lines from the poem by Lewis Caroll come to my mind often at the strangest of moments. They’ve been playing in my mind these days; I think it’s stirring my senses because of the change in weather. With winter round the corner, the best winter vegetables are beginning to show up here. No more spinach; there’s more to green leaves now. We’ve lived out the summer with stone-fruits dominating our lives in North India because that’s the only interesting thing around. The less said about…

APRICOT CHUTNEY…A RELISH TO RELISH!
“I am giddy, expectation whirls me round. The imaginary relish is so sweet That it enchants my sense.”William Shakespeare This chutney is LONG overdue. On my last chutney post, way back in May, my sweet Greek friend Ivy @ Kopiaste had asked for a fruit chutney. With that in mind, I bought some dried Turkish Apricots to make a fruit chutney for her; then life took off in some other direction. The poor apricots sat silently in the corner of my cupboard lost in oblivion. I tripped across the poor mites day before, & put making this chutney on priority. At that time, Ivy said of my green chutney…”This sounds lovely.…

BLING ON BOLLYWOOD WITH A LAMB CURRY!
Hasta la vista, Baby Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) BLING ON BOLLYWOOD…LAMB CURRY! Hasta la vista; is a Spanish parting phrase meaning “see you” or “so long”. It literally means “until the seeing”, but is used in the sense “until next time”. My dish here reflects the same sorta feeling. It’s the time of the month again for The Monthly Mingle at Meeta’s @ What’s For Lunch Honey! This time’s special…it’s the BOLLYWOOD bling!! Time to show-off colour, polish the family silver, splurge on all things oily & rich…generally ROLL OUT THE RED CARPET!! Also time to fall off my ‘healthy perch’…blame it on Bollywood or blame it on…

CURRY CONNECTIONS…LAMB CURRY & POTATOES
“What I say is that, if a fellow really likes potatoes, he must be a pretty decent sort of fellow.”A. A. Milne What’s Cooking ? Curry, I said! Ben @ What’s Cooking US asked me one day if I’d like to contribute something from my part of the world for his ‘What’s Cooking World’ series. C’mon Ben, I said….wouldn’t I just? Any foodie worth his/her salt jumps to a good opportunity that knocks. I had to put on my thinking cap though, as I had posted most of my favourite lamb curries earlier. Suddenly remembered this one…a lamb curry with the very humble potato. Lamb, curry & potatoes make a…

SIMPLE HOME STLYE LAMB CURRY / TAMATAR GOSHT…FOOD FOR THOUGHT!
“What is patriotism but the love of the food one ate as a child?” Lin Yutang SIMPLE HOME-STYLE LAMB CURRY…Tamatar Gosht! Food nostalgia is something I am sure all of us hold dear. My mother was, & is still, a marvellous cook, & is famous for her traditional meals like lamb/chicken curry, biryanis etc. People would flock to our place during festivals to grab a bite. Strangely for me, I have few memories of what I ate as a child. The fault lay with me of course, as I was a distracted soul, with little interest in what I ate. Hardly worthy for someone who has such a HUGE interest…
