NATURE & TREKKING IN THE HILLS…the last Himalayan post!
“Nothing is more memorable than a smell. One scent can be unexpected, momentary and fleeting, yet conjure up a childhood summer beside a lake in the mountains…” Diane Ackerman My third & last account of our trip into the hills. Since we stayed in a remote little heritage cottage, far removed from the hustle & bustle of urban life, much of our time was spent exploring the hills around. It was easy to set off in any direction, & we would find man made foot trodden paths winding along hillsides for miles to end. On & off we’d come across small cottages, made of mud & wood, self-sufficient in their…

FRUITS IN THE HIMALAYAS…& PEACH-ROSEMARY JAM RECIPE
“Thought is the blossom, language the bud, action the fruit behind.” Ralph Waldo Emerson Here’s a little more about our recent trip into the hills, the adventurous beginning of which you can read about in my first post here. This second post is a bit of a fruity one; well mostly anyway. Ramgarh is a serene hill station in the Himalayas, perched at an altitude of about 1800 m above the sea level. It is quite the idyllic place for offbeat leisurely holidays in peace and tranquility, & is known for its fruit orchards and wonderful views of the Himalayas. On clear days you can see the snow-capped ranges of the Himalayas…

A TRIP TO THE HIMALAYAS…a recipe for happiness!
“I’ve been staying at their lodge in the Himalayas for years, … They have this beautiful lodge. You look out and there’s Ama Dablam. Oh man, it’s like heaven.”Pete Shelley It was something we’ve wanted to do for long, but somehow it never materialised. Though we’ve been into the hills before, the Himalayas hadn’t ever been explored by self-drive. Luckily for us in the plains of North India, there are a number of Himalayan hill stations that are accessible by road, & summer is the best time to escape the heat of the plains. For once, things seemed to fall into place, & we managed to take our dream trip…

Coffee Butter Cake … from The Australian Heritage Cookbook
“I have measured out my life with coffee spoons.” T. S. Elliot If you’re looking at making a comforting cake, to enjoy with a cup of coffee, or maybe to gift, or then just for the kids to snack on…& are kind of short on time, look no further. Is hard to believe the ease of making this cake, quite similar to a pound cake in all respects, but just much simpler to put together. It’s as simple as mixing the dry ingredients together, then adding all the wet ones in & beating till smooth. The result is amazingly delicious. If coffee is not your cup of tea, substitute it…

Sydney Without a Beach Visit is like Cake Without Frosting… Part IV!
Part IV of my Sydney travelogue covers a beautiful beach we went to, after crossing the Harbour Bridge & entering North Sydney. A visit to Sydney is incomplete without a visit to the beach (or better still, beaches). It’s true…& more so for kids. We stopped by Bondi the last time we visited, which was in June of 2004…cold, windy but beautiful. This time we decided to explore Balmoral. Balmoral features Balmoral and Edwards Beaches, both of which are separated by the outcrop of Rocky Point. Both beaches are usually referred to as simply Balmoral.A stunning beach, with a beautiful island of it’s own, Rocky Point. The boys had a…

NIGHT ON THE ROCKS…& HARRY’S (Sydney Part III)
It seemed like we were in Sydney for just a clutch of days, half of them whizzed by helplessly when the daughter fell ill. Still, looking back, we magically managed to do so much & more. My travelogue continues… . It was a NIGHT ON THE ROCKS. The only day we managed to fix the kids at home with take-out (pizza, what else?), got them a bunch of films & drove for a trip out downtown. We’ve done The Rocks during the day before, on our last trip, but Sydney downtown at night is sensational. I’m glad we did it when we did, coz even though we thought we’d hit…
